A digital certificate, which is issued by a Certification Authority (CA), forms an association between an identity and the public/private key pair possessed by the holder of the identity. Like an identity card used in daily life, a digital certificate is used in the electronic world to authenticate oneself.

A digital certificate contains the name of the holder, a serial number, expiration date, a copy of the certificate holder's public key (used for encrypting messages and digital signatures), and the digital signature of the CA so that a recipient can verify that the certificate is real.
