How
does e-TS work?
Steps of
generating a timestamp:
| 1 |
A person
intends to obtain a timestamp for a piece of electronic data
he possesses. |
| |
|
| 2 |
The
person signs the data using his private key and generates a
digital signature. |
| |
|
| 3 |
A fingerprint
(technically, a hash value) for the digital signature is generated
on his computer. |
| |
|
4 |
The
fingerprint is sent to the Time-Stamping Authority (TSA). |
| |
|
| 5 |
The
TSA generates a timestamp with the fingerprint, the date and
time obtained from an accurate time
source and the TSA's digital
signature. |
| |
|
| 6 |
The
timestamp is sent back to the sender. |
| |
|
| 7 |
The
TSA keeps a record of the timestamp for future verification
and retrieval. |
